Environmentalists and green technologists put a lot of focus on recycling plastic. But then again, there really is a need to get it done. Plastic is primarily a petroleum-based product, and petroleum comes from the planet’s depleting fossil fuels. While there is so much emphasis given on recycling plastic, some people tend to ignore the need of recycling other materials, particularly recycling glass.
Recycling skeptics insist that there is not a lot of value to be had from recycling glass. They believe that in recycling glass, more energy is wasted rather than saved, making the process totally not worth it. Research, however, has proven these skeptics wrong. There are actually a number of benefits that we can get when we recycle glass, and saving energy is just one of them.
The Britglass.org website released some pretty interesting facts about recycling glass and saving energy. Did you know that recycling a single glass bottle can:
* Keep a computer running for 25 minutes?
* Let us watch a colored TV set for 20 minutes?
* Use the washing machine for 10 minutes?
* Light up a room with a 100-watt light bulb for one hour?
If recycling one glass bottle can do that, imagine how much energy we can save to power up households when we bring a ton of glass to recycling centers. Currently, only 2.5 million tons of glass bottles are taken to the recycling centers every year, out of the 17 million that the glass industry produces annually. Researchers have reported that doubling this amount of glass bottles brought out for recycling every year can provide enough power for a small town.
That is just power. We have yet to touch on the fact that we can recycle glass over and over without the glass losing quality. If we can do that, we can also save on the raw materials that glass makers use in manufacturing glass. We can also create more jobs in recycling centers. If these are not true benefits that we can get from recycling glass, then nothing is.
