ecological house
exprience in a co-housing community?
do you or any good friends of yours have any experience as a single person entering a co-housing community. i have been living abroad for many years and am thinking of returning to the usa and living near siblings and their kids. after having had a house on my own, i am drawn to the sharing of ecological resources, for environment’s sake and also for the natural connection possible. i had some friends who had co-housing and it was quite positive, but there was a fair amount of struggle with common building use and maintenance, which they eventually sold to another co-housing family. all experiences, positive or negative, i’m interested in hearing about.

co-housing means each person has their own totally separate home, but there is usually a common house for group meetings, etc. often for non-obligatory weekly meals. it’s the upkeep of this and other tasks that have to be shared;
Personally I think its a bad idea. Especially when you and the other parties reach a disgareement on a certain design aspect of the housing. Its better to be the boss and decide what you want to build and spend, and delegate the work you can’t do to subcontracters (i.e – your friends).
Aaah – sorry didin’t know what you meant. Here in the UK we have a range of examples of this type of social set-up.
You get co-housing where people tend to share a house by partioning it into ‘maisonette’s’ but they tend to have no contact with thier nieghbours, and this kind of set-up tends to be OK.
The other type is when a very large house (ex-mansion) is partioned into seperate flats, but everyone shares the common area, which they all pass through to get to thier aprtments. This kind of set-up is expensive because you have to pay an extra charge – ususally the equivalent of the local government taxes, to pay for a regular cleaner to maintain the facility. My friend lives in these places and is happy.
