my husband built a dolls house from a kit for our 10year grandaughter.?
Unfortunately. he overdid it with the wood glue, and now there are big ,hard,ugly lumps of glue everywhere. My grandaughter wants to decorate the dolls house, but is very disheartened and feels that it will look scruffy. I have tried digging it off with a scraper but there is just too much, it will take forever. I have also tried softening it with a heat gun but with the same result. I have been searching the d.i.y. shops for something that may help dissolve the glue, but to no avail. Can anyone help? If not ,it means scrapping the dolls house and buying a new one ,which will cause untold damage to my husbands ego!
Since it’s wood glue, taking most of it off would go a lot faster if using a Dremel (or other small “rotary tool”), out-fitted with one of its sanding or grinding bits (they’re a great tool to have around if he doesn’t already own one).
Rotary tools come with bits that have different shapes, grits, and stiffnesses, so you should just use the ones that might be best for flat expanses, vs. inside corners, or whatever area he’s working on at the moment.
I’d definitely wear a mask while doing this if there’s a lot of glue to get rid of though just because you want to keep any type of particulate matter out of your lungs when there’s a lot of it. Doing it outside might be helpful too since the dust will probably settle everywhere.
That should work fairly well to get all the lumps flattened out reasonably quickly, in preparation for painting or wall-papering, etc.
Your DH should just think of this as “finishing” work on his creation, not a re-do! It would be a real shame not to use the whole thing because of a problem like this… I’m sure your granddaughter will really enjoy the house her grandpa made for her.
(Next time he works with wood and wood glue like this, he’ll know that he needs to clean up the glued areas with a damp cloth before they dry, or clamp them first then wipe off anything that comes out at that point… stuff we all have to learn
