Why is organic architecture so different from the everyday type of design work?

Most buildings are designed for the purpose of utility. I think it might be fair to say that well over 90% of all buildings are designed without any particular thought or reference given to their site. Which is to say the vast majority of structures are not designed specifically for that piece of land upon which they rest.

Plan books are produced by the hundred every year. But how is it possible for the draftsperson to know where any given set of plans may end up being built. The answer is that obviously they cannot know.

A good builder might be able to make minor alterations to suit the client to a degree, but the plans themselves were not designed to cater to either that client nor that piece of ground.

That is what would be considered the everyday type of design work. Whether or not it could be considered legitimate architecture is another matter entirely.

Organic architecture, on the other hand, is very carefully designed for a particular client on a particular piece of property.

An organically designed house takes into consideration such things as the four seasons; spring, summer, autumn and winter. How will the house handle the changes of season from a comfort point of view? What will the effects of the changing lengths of daylight and warmth from the sun have on the occupants? Does the house take full advantage of all of the surroundings? Will it be economical to operate? There is an extensive list of considerations involving the design of an organic house, and this is only the beginning.

Not the least of which is this. Does the house look almost as if it grew there? Is it perfectly suited to both the building site and the owners? Does it really belong at that place and at that time?
