Solar shingles are used for roofing improvements to help reduce energy cost or be an alternate source of energy. They were first used in 2005, but are on their way upward in the home improvement (and standard construction) market.
They operate as photovoltaic cells, much like solar panels. They take sun and create energy from it. They produce direct current (DC), and since most homes use alternating current (AC), one of the concerns is having a way to convert the power from one to another.
The appearance of solar shingles is much like the shingles on most roofs. For this reason a lot of people working on home improvement like them, since it’s a lot better looking that installing gigantic solar panels on top of their roof.
The use of these shingles is for power for the home. Some homes use it in conjunction with standard electricity, but some do use it for a backup energy supply in the case that electricity is not sufficient (or an outage is experienced).
Modern installation of the shingles takes only approximately 10 hours. Solar panels can take a full 24+ hours to install, so the cost is substantially lower for solar shingles. Some homebuilders are beginning to install solar shingles to homes during initial construction. Doing this cuts costs on the overhead, so they are becoming an option to install during home construction.
Solar shingles are also referred to as “solar roof tiles”. Installation of them on an existing roof does not require additional space or major changes to the roof. They weigh close to two thirds of the weight of normal roofing tiles, so in most cases a full restoration of the roof or repair is not needed.
Overall, the installation of solar shingles helps improve the energy efficiency of the home, and there are no major reductions in quality to the roof while doing this.
