Thou Shalt Not Lose Heat… Quality insulation is high on the list of priorities for solar thermal engineers. R19 fiberglass insulation is recommended for walls and this R-value should be doubled for attics. Insulating exterior walls with rolls of polystyrene foam before applying siding is also a good a good idea that could pay for itself in a few years.

Thou Shalt Not Use Cellulose Insulation… Beware of blown-in cellulose insulation. It becomes highly flammable when allowed to dry out in hot attics. I learned this the hard way by setting fire to the cellulose, attic insulation during a bathroom plumbing job.

Thou Shalt Save Money… Solar applications are long-range investments that pay for themselves in time, but ten years may be too long for most people to wait. HOWEVER investing in sunshine can still work in your favor if you learn the basics and develop the skills needed to build and install your own application.

Thou Shalt Use Curtains… Major heat losses occur around windows and doors, but these heat losses are not always related to air infiltration. A certain amount of fresh air is always necessary in a household. More heat is normally lost through thermo pane windows and un-insulated doors than through the little cracks around them. A few well-placed curtains may do more to conserve heat than all the calking available from Home Depot.

Thou Shalt Isolate Stored Heat… Sunlight provides an intermittent heat energy resource that must be stored to have a lasting value. By isolating the heat collection area from the heat storage area heat losses through collector glazing is minimized. Did you know that more heat is lost through skylights in the evening than gained during a sunny day? Batch heaters provide another example of excess heat loss through inadequate stored heat insulation. Although a batch heater may be practical in a warm, sunny climate it may not be suitable in cold areas. In these snow-belt areas heat loss through a batch heater un-insulated glazing is often greater than the daytime heat gain.

Thou Shalt Look Good: Flush mounted solar collector arrays on properly oriented residential roofs or diagonal mounted collectors on flat top roofs have become acceptable in most neighborhoods, but dwellings with east/west roof orientations only offer unattractive mounting option and an unacceptable eyesores. For this reason a remote sun-shed or solar heated workshop may be a viable alternative to roof mounted collectors.

Thou Shalt Think Big… Our sun contains about 99% of the mass in our solar system and, as we know, all the energy and matter for our planet comes from our sun. Unfortunately sunlight is a diffuse resource that must be harvested over a large area and unfortunately we have become addicted to the convenience of energy concentrates like oil. The transition from our present, energy dependent, oil-based economy to an energy independent sun based economy will not be easy but our survival depends on our ability to reconnecting with the sun. We need to think as big as our sun and design energy efficient houses with roofs pointing toward the yellow ball in the sky.

Our sun is a practical, safe nuclear power plant, available to everyone who can experience the light of day. It’s located at a safe distance from population centers with no toxic waste products to worry about. By bringing more sunshine into our lives and by experiencing the joy of building and installing our own solar heating systems our lives could be less stressful. My name is John Canivan. I design and build and illustrate how to solar thermal heating and hot water systems and I’d like the opportunity to help you become a little greener.
