When people think of Solar Energy, they sometimes don’t think of it as 100% green energy because of the complex processes needed to capture the full value of the sun.  However, solar energy is truly a green energy source.  It has renewable elements, and its capture does not have any harmful effects to the environment.  It is achieved by capturing the suns rays and converting them into electricity with solar cells help.

Passive, active, and photovoltaic cells are the three ways we can use this form of green energy and use it.

In passive solar energy, none of what is captured is actually converted into power.  For example, in a building, passive energy is effective because it integrates the building’s design to its full green benefit.  It utilizes the advanced design to help avoid heat loss, and maximize day lighting instead of using power to light the building.

This technique can also be used in domestic home use, because up to 80% of heating costs and code requirements can be reduced, and at a minimal cost.  The result – you don’t have to run the heater or air-conditioner as much throughout the day, and your electricity consumption is reduced dramatically.  If implemented in a larger scale, overall we consume much less electricity that comes from current non-renewable resources.

Active solar is converting sunlight into heat.  This approach is what most people think of when they hear of solar energy.  However, this is also the one that has most limitations because basically you are simply using the sun’s heat to create hot water.  A good example of this is to have water coils on your roof, and then recirculation will push that water into your pool to keep it warm.

The third and final approach to solar energy is the most common version.  Photovoltaic cells are used here, and its use can power an entire home or office.  Here, solar cells convert sunlight into electricity.  Actually, the most common use of this is often taken for granted as calculators and watches use photovoltaic cells.  On a larger scale, these cells can be planted over large acres of land for more widespread use.

So what does it cost to have solar energy panels for my home? Solar energy can be an expensive up-front investment and may take up to 10 years before your solar panel investment pays off. One way around the exorbitant costs of hiring a solar energy company to install your solar panels, would be to diy solar panels. Making your own solar panels is much easier than you think. DIY solar panel can be quite easy to make if you follow a step by step manual. Most importantly, it can cost you as little as $200 bucks to DIY.
