Own a cabin that’s off the grid?
How about a utility shed that’s not connected to your home wiring system, and would like to run a power tool every now and then there?
If you answered yes to either of these, this article is for you.
I’m sure at some point you have thought of getting electricity to a structure that does not have power, whether it’s in a hunting cabin to run a small TV/DVD player for those quiet nights or a tool shed, or any other such structure, and it is simply not viable to get power to this area.
Researched the internet for solar power systems, saw the cost, and threw that idea out the window?
Well, you can go back to that idea, as building your own remote solar power system is an easy thing to do, and does not take a rocket scientist to achieve this. Also, the cost of building a remote solar power system can be achieved for about $200, which pales in comparison to remote solar power systems that are commercially available, and cost usually over $1500.
The basic steps to building your own solar panel systems are outlined below:
1. Research online and purchase a bulk lot of solar panel cells (also known as PV cells)
2. Go to your local hardware store and purchase supplies to build the frame.
3. Measure out the size of the frame needed, and begin construction of the frame.
4. Solder the PV cells in the pre-determined array.
5. Test the solar panel and seal the solar panel.
6. Run the feed wire from the solar panel to a small power inverter.
7. Hope for the next sunny day and enjoy your new remote solar power system.
As you can see, building a remote solar system is not a difficult task, and can be a fun new project to take on. And of course the benefits of having that power in your remote location mean having power where you want it, and of course using the benefits of the sun to power your devices naturally. How many other people do you know that can say “I’ve build my own solar power system?” Probably not many, but now you can add this to the list of interesting things you have built.
