Wind turbines for home use generally start at around $5,000 fully installed, and can cost as much as $20,000. However, a growing number of online enthusiasts have found an ingenious way to build their own for just $200.
The secret to making a quality wind turbine for peanuts is to source a few components from ebay – the remaining parts are low tech and can be made pretty easily from plywood, steel and plastic.
After installing a few of these turbines, it is possible to generate all the electricity needed for your entire home and even be able to sell it back to the grid. Therefore the money spent on these items can be recovered in just a few months.
Example DIY Wind Turbine Project
A typical build would involve sourcing the following parts on ebay or a hardware store: -
1 x 42V dc stepper motor – $60
2 x sprockets – $10
1 x chain – $5
6 x carbon fiber Air-X 28″ blades – $80
1 x thrust bearing for the pole swivel – $5
2 x ball bearings for the rotor – $8
A frame would then need to be constructed to hold the components into position, as well as a pole to allow the unit to swivel.
This rapid increase in DIY wind turbines for home installation has been largely due to the recession, and also because it has a positive effect on stopping global warming which is important.
Because they are positioned so high, they are very easy to spot and therefore it will get a lot of praise from your neighbours and visiting friends. In fact as long as it is positioned up high where the wind is strong, there’s not really a reason not to make one.
So why are some people still sceptical about them?
Mostly due to a lack of understanding, wind turbines are often frowned upon as being useless at making electricity and a noisy, unsightly nuisance.

The UK government, are convinced that wind turbines for home use are too important a technology to be halted by planning permission arguments. Permission to install turbines is in the process of being rapidly phased out in the UK in order to reach it’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050.
This is a huge milestone for domestic wind power, which will no doubt see a massive increase of installations – perhaps one on every roof by 2050.
